Long ago, in Nazareth, lived a kind young woman named Mary. She loved God very much. One day, the angel Gabriel came to visit her!

Page 6

“Hail Mary, full of grace!” said the angel. “God has chosen you to be the mother of His Son. You will name Him Jesus.” (Luke 1:28–31)

Page 7

Mary said, “Yes! I am the Lord's servant. Let it be done as you have said.” The angel went away full of joy.

Let us pray

Dear God, help me to say yes to You, just like Mary.

Oh no, the wine ran out! Mary noticed, and she told Jesus. Then she said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5)

Page 15

Jesus told them to fill six big jars with water. And the water turned into the very best wine! It was Jesus's first miracle.

Let us pray

Mother Mary, help me to do whatever Jesus tells me.

Our Mother, Too

Jerusalem

Mary loved Jesus His whole life long. Even on the saddest day, when Jesus died on the cross for us, Mary stayed close to Him. Jesus said to His friend John, “Here is your mother.”

Page 17

Three days later, Jesus rose to new life! Mary's heart was filled with joy. Alleluia! And from that day on, Mary is our mother too.

Let us pray

Mother Mary, thank you for being my mother too.

Roses in Winter

Tepeyac Hill, Mexico, 1531

Many years later, in Mexico, a humble man named Juan Diego was walking up a hill. He heard birds singing, and he saw a beautiful Lady, shining like the sun!

Page 22

The Lady said she was the Mother of God, and she asked for a church to be built. The bishop wanted a sign, so the Lady sent Juan Diego to pick roses on the hilltop, in the middle of winter!

Page 23

Juan Diego carried the roses to the bishop in his cloak. When he opened it, roses tumbled out, and there was a beautiful picture of Mary on his cloak! You can still see it today.

Let us pray

Our Lady of Guadalupe, hold me close like your little child.

Let's Pray the Hail Mary

The angel's words, and ours too!

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

A little prayer for little ones

Mother Mary, sweet and mild, hold me close, your little child. Help me say yes to God like you, and love your Son, Jesus, too! Amen.

Be Like Mary!

Color in a rose each time you do it!

I can say yes when God asks.

I can hurry to help someone.

I can notice when someone needs help.

I can be gentle and kind.

I can pray a Hail Mary!

For Grown-Ups

Where these stories come from: the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles and the Church's tradition about Mary, retold here simply and gently for young children.

The Angel's Big News. Luke 1:26–38, the Annunciation. Gabriel's greeting, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you,” opens the Hail Mary, and Mary's answer, “Let it be done to me according to your word,” is her great yes.

A Happy Visit. Luke 1:39–56, the Visitation. Elizabeth's greeting, “Blessed are you among women,” and John leaping in her womb; Mary's song of praise is the Magnificat. Tradition places Elizabeth's home at Ein Karem, near Jerusalem.

A Baby in a Manger. Luke 2:1–20. “Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (2:19).

The Wedding Party. John 2:1–11. At Mary's word, “Do whatever he tells you,” the servants filled six stone jars with water, which Jesus turned into wine: the first of his signs.

Our Mother, Too. John 19:25–27: from the cross Jesus entrusted Mary and the beloved disciple to each other (“Behold your son… Behold your mother”), and the Church has always seen in this Mary's motherhood of all believers. We have kept this page gentle for young readers. The Resurrection: Matthew 28, Luke 24.

Queen of Heaven. Acts 1:14 and 2:1–4: Mary prayed with the apostles before Pentecost. The Assumption (feast August 15) was defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950; the Queenship of Mary is celebrated on August 22.

Roses in Winter. In December 1531, Our Lady appeared to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac hill near Mexico City and asked for a church. When Bishop Juan de Zumárraga asked for a sign, Juan Diego gathered roses in winter in his tilma, which was found to bear her image; it hangs today in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her feast is December 12. Other feasts of Mary include January 1 (Mary, Mother of God) and December 8 (the Immaculate Conception).
