In the Creed we say: “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” These are the four marks of the Church:
- One: we share one Lord, one faith and one Baptism, united in the Eucharist and under the Pope and bishops.
- Holy: Jesus makes the Church holy. Its members are sinners, yet all are called to holiness.
- Catholic: “catholic” means universal. The Church has the fullness of the faith and is sent to everyone in the world.
- Apostolic: the Church is built on the apostles, and the bishops are their successors.
Jesus said to Simon: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church.” He gave Peter the keys of the kingdom. The Pope is the successor of Saint Peter.
Bishops lead dioceses as successors of the apostles. Priests help the bishop and serve parishes. Deacons serve in the liturgy and in works of charity.
Church leaders are called to serve, just as Jesus washed His disciples' feet.
